Moe’s revelation about Ed losing his job went a long way toward explaining Paula’s caginess with me, and why she hadn’t been keen to take a look at those records.

I could go back and confront her with this new piece of information, but I doubted it would get me very far. She’d clammed up tighter than, well, a clam, and it would take a lot more legal pull than I had to get to the good stuff inside.

Had Lily known? I thought back to our earlier conversation. No, she’d specifically told me about Ed’s job. There’d been no suggestion that anything was wrong. As far as she knew, Ed had been going to work as normal right up until his death. Had he just been afraid to tell her the truth or was there more to it than that? What else might he have been hiding?

It wouldn’t help Lily to hear any of this just yet. She was upset enough as it was. I’d speak with her once I had a clearer idea of what was going on. In the meantime, I had a few other people left to interview—not least of them, in view of the boys’ comments, Mayor Turner.

Larry, Curly and Moe helped me complete my list of the people who’d been at Dad’s funeral and provided contact details where they could. The rest of that information I was able to pull off the internet the next morning, courtesy of the free Wi-Fi at the Happy Nights.

I called the mayor’s office first thing but was told he was out of town until the following day, so I made an appointment for when he got back. I’d speak to the rest of the people on my list in a little while. First, though, I had another important task to complete.

I’d never expected to be in Lakeview this long, and I hadn’t brought much in the way of clean clothing. What I had on was beginning to get a little ripe.

I took a taxi back to the Lakeside Inn to pick up my Wrangler. When the four of us had finally rolled out of there late last night, I’d been in no state to drive, despite Larry’s ideas about relaxation and its effect on the ability to handle a vehicle, so I’d gotten a cab back to my motel room. I can be impulsive at times, but I’m not stupid.

The car was where I’d left it, and undamaged. That was one good thing about this place. You could get raped and murdered, or your bank account legally cleaned out by the good folks at Jackpot Jack’s, but at least no-one would steal your car.

Come to think of it, that wasn’t true, was it? Richie’s had been stolen, for one. With both of us still inside it.

Anyway.

I suppose that I could have done some laundry at Dad’s or Lily’s, or looked for a Laundromat somewhere in town, but cleaning my clothes was hardly on my laundry list right now. So I
